Weather report: cold but sunny

The wonderful thing about Peniche and Baleal is that you have beaches in different directions, which creates different options for surfers.

Michael and Amélie got in the water immediately on Friday, but they discovered that the temperature is not quite the same as when we were here a few weeks ago and they froze their feet off 😬

This called for a solution of course:

And then they were good to go 👍

To be honest, it IS getting colder now, around 15 degrees during the day. In the sun it’s still amazing, but after sunset it gets cold very quickly. For the very first time I made myself a cup of tea tonight!

I refuse to put on the heater 💪

Here some more pictures of the last days:

Moving on

Thursday we finally got our much needed delivery of Herbalife products, it’s a blessing to have them around when you are traveling! We had to wait on a parking lot for 20 minutes (we had given the address of the Rip Curl store in Peniche) and then…

The weather was changing and the waves were too strong for Amélie, so did what normal people do when they are at the beach

Friday it started pouring unfortunately

So we took off, after almost 2 weeks 😱

We are just south of Lisbon now where the weather is better, amazing spot right on the beach (yes, for free)

But unfortunately it’s the weekend now and last night we ran off at 10.30 pm because of the loud music.

We’ll see what today brings…

Halloween tooth 👻

Yes, we are still in Peniche 😜 there are so many beaches here that it hasn’t been boring yet, so…

Yesterday was a bit cloudy so we decided to do a little trip to Óbidos, a beautiful medieval town.

We had lunch there but unfortunately had to wait very long for our food and were molested by flies, this was Michael’s brilliant solution to that

We heard singing and went inside this small church, where the village people had come together for the mass (of all saints I suppose…?) and they sang together so beautifully that I couldn’t help shedding a tear 😍

Also worth your while is this amazing bookstore, my kind of shop!!!

When we returned to Peniche we did some shopping in the surf shops (yes, I have new flip flops!) and got offered some Halloween candy in one of them.

30 seconds later Amélie shocked all of us with a mouth full of blood and a tooth stuck in a caramel, now that’s what I call Halloween worthy 😂😂😂

So she lost 2 teeth already on this trip, hopefully she’ll have some left when we return…

Oh yeah, by the way, this was last night’s sunset 😜

Oh, hi officer 😬

Full day yesterday!

First, we went on a hunt for gas, very important! Our 2nd and last bottle was now only running on fumes, and we were a little bit nervous because we have a Belgian system which is not compatible with the Portuguese gas bottles… so first we went to a camping for some advice and they sent us to a small shop that had a really complicated solution 😱 luckily they sent us to another shop and there we found what was needed + we got some assistance in changing the system, thank you Repsol!

Now that we were sure our fridge would keep functioning it was time to head to the beach and try the new board of course,

But first… a lesson in waxing!

And then she was good to go 👍

This board is smaller than the first one, so more difficult of course, but she nailed it 🙂 this was one of the first attempts:

Yup, it takes a lot of practice!

But then, last night while having dinner in our camper, a police car started circling around us… so we were worried that maybe we couldn’t stay there or we did something wrong maybe… the police officer was this young macho athletic guy and he got out of his car and came right at us, so Michael got out of the camper to find out what was wrong.

“You speak Portuguese?” the guy asked, but in this really macho way some (not all 😜) police officers talk.

“No, sorry!”

“English?”

“Yes!”

“So… where are the numbers??” (He pointed at our licence plate)

“There are no numbers, this is the combination”, Michael replied.

“No, where are the numbers!!??” (He wasn’t convinced…)

“Really, this is our plate, you can check on the back, it’s the same!”

“Yeah I checked the back, there are no numbers!!!”

And then Michael explained to the guy that in Belgium you can choose a combination if you pay extra and that we did just that and chose:

And the police officer started laughing and he said “I can’t believe it!” And then he took of, still laughing and shaking his head, while looking at the plate.

As did we.

😂😂😂

So Peniche it is?

We never stayed this long in one spot, we enjoy the beach with the body boards or we rent a surfboard,

Yes this is ME actually

We drive our camper to the service spot at the Intermarché (which is free, Thank you Intermarché!!) to refill the water and clean the toilet etc, and then we just drive back to our spot at the beach 🙂

But yesterday (friday) I suggested it was time to move on and maybe we should go to a camping for the weekend, to do some laundry etc.

So on a perfect surf day with 27 degrees C, we drove for over an hour via the beautiful coastline,

Only to find out that the camping was next to a beach that was

A) too far

B) too dangerous, with rocks all over

😐

As this was really not our thing, we decided to check out Santa Cruz

Which was really beautiful! But the surf school was closed so no chance of renting a board for Amélie…

It was there that we decided to just head back to Peniche 😬

But with a little detour..

Yes, Decathlon is doing great business as long as we’re around 😂

It was such a great feeling last night when we finally got back to our spot, we all felt like coming home, which is really odd (it’s just a parking) and today (Saturday) Amélie is ready to test out the new board… to be continued! 🏄

Surf’s Up!

So…what have we been up to since the last post?!

First of all, we had to catch up on some school work, so Friday and Saturday were mostly that.

Which resulted in this

Then Michael came ‘home’ Saturday night (yay!) and we took him to see Belém on Sunday, to visit the modern art museum

When we had a drink afterwards on a nice terrace next to the river,

(Yes. A. is sniffing my beer when I’m not watching), Michael accidentally threw his beer all over me because supposedly there was a fly on my shoulder 😬 this was what M and A looked like when I got back from the toilet (cleaning up my jeans)

Scared as hell, as they should be…

Before we could get in an Uber, my pants had to be dry so we walked to the beautiful Torre de Belém

But enough about Lisbon! We are in such a great place now: Peniche!

Our friend Carry tipped us about a surf contest here, so we left Lisbon on Monday to check it out. We found ourselves a nice free spot again, right on the beach, thanks to the app Park4night (we owe this app a lot!)

And on Tuesday we had a lot of fun with the MEO Rip Curl contest

But today was the very best, because finally Amélie could try it herself 🏄

We rented a board for her and she really nailed it

So now we are back in our camper, all glowing and happy with this great day and curious about what tomorrow will bring, one thing is for sure: we sure DID flip flop our daughters life 😉

Notice the flip flops on our hats 😜
